With the guildpact in place, Ravnica is relatively safe and peaceful in comparison to medieval-themed worlds, but intrigue and adventure still abound. Over time, the prosperity of the guilds grew to such a degree that the planet became entirely covered in the cityscape. This effectively saved civilization on Ravnica but also pushed the rivalries of the guilds into more clandestine and indirect conflicts. Thousands of years in the setting's past, a magically enforced law, known as the guildpact, was forged to stop highly destructive wars between the guilds. A synergy of tabletop game's two highest pillars of D&D and MtG, the setting of Ravnica is best understood as one huge, world-spanning city, dominated by the influence of 10 separate organizations known as guilds. Half the planet's population claims membership in one of the guilds and they vary in both alignment and structure, but each is responsible for at least one aspect of life in the city while also vying for total control over it.
